Kim O'Leary, PT
My belief is that physical therapy should be a collaborative process between the therapist and the client. I work closely with my clients to develop personalized treatment plans that not only addresses their physical needs but also take into account their lifestyle and goals.
I have a comprehensive approach to physical therapy and wellness combining traditional methods with advanced manual techniques, focusing on the whole person- mind, body and spirit.
At your first visit, my primary goal is to understand your unique needs and concerns while creating a personalized plan for your care. I'll start by getting to know you, discussing your history, and identifying your goals for therapy.
What to Expect During Your Assessment:
I'll conduct a thorough evaluation tailored to your specific situation, which may include:
• Observing your gait, balance, and movement patterns.
• Assessing your posture and joint mobility.
• Evaluating muscle strength using manual testing and functional testing techniques.
• Palpating for soft tissue tension in your muscles and fascia.
• Checking neural tension through guided movements of your arms, legs, neck, or back.
• Performing special manual tests to assess specific injuries or concerns.
This comprehensive evaluation helps me address your needs holistically and design a treatment plan that promotes healing, restores function, and enhances your overall well-being. I'm here to guide you every step of the way!
Kim has 30 plus years of experience as a physical therapist. She graduated from UNE in Biddeford, Maine and has practiced PT in many states as well as overseas. She specializes in manual therapy and believes you need to get to the source of the discomfort before you can “exercise” it away.
Some of these trainings include: Integrative Manual Therapies, Strain Counter Strain, Muscle Energy techniques, Visceral therapies, Orthopedic Manual Therapy (OMT), and Cranial Therapy. Other tools in her tool box include Kinesiotaping and LLLT ( laser therapy).
She has a special interest in pain science, disorders of the spine, gut - brain connection and helping women over 40 continue with active lives and recreational sport.
Kim enjoys empowering folks to understand their bodies while helping them recover from injury or managing chronic issues. Physical therapy should be functional and fun addressing the cause as well as the rehabilitation.
Kim lives with her husband in South Paris where they enjoy everything outdoors especially running, sea kayaking, hiking, biking and cross country skiing. They have two young border collies which also keep them very busy!
Traditional PT includes postural education, range of motion, stretching, strengthening, joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, low level light therapy (cold laser), and establishment of Home Exercise Programs. Home programs are monitored and progressed as appropriate.
Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) is a holistic approach to healing that combines advanced manual techniques and assessments to address dysfunction in the body. IMT focuses on identifying and treating the root causes of pain and imbalance by working with the body’s soft tissues, joints, fascia, organs, and nervous system. It integrates multiple disciplines to promote optimal function, enhance mobility, and support the body’s natural healing processes, addressing the whole person—physically, emotionally, and energetically.
Strain Counterstrain (SCS) is a manual therapy technique used in physical therapy to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. The goal of Strain Counterstrain is to alleviate pain and muscle tension by positioning the body in a way that minimizes stress and strain on injured or tender tissues, allowing the body to decrease it's protective muscle tension. By doing this the muscle spindle is reset allowing the muscle fibers to relax decreasing pain and restoring movement.
Visceral therapy is a specialized form of manual therapy that treats restrictions and dysfunctions within the internal organs and their surrounding structures. By restoring the normal mobility and function of the organs, visceral therapy aims to alleviate pain, improve bodily function, and promote overall health. It is commonly used in treating digestive issues, chronic pain, post-surgical adhesions, and musculoskeletal pain, and can be a valuable tool in a comprehensive treatment plan for various health conditions.
Cranial therapy is a gentle, hands-on physical therapy approach focused on assessing and improving the function of the craniosacral system. This system includes the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. My cranial work is through my IMT education.
Orthopedic Manual Therapy (OMT) is a specialized area of physical therapy focused on treating musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction through hands-on techniques. Which include gentle mobilizations to the joints and spine.
Muscle energy techniques that use the clients muscles by the therapist manually resisting selective movements to adjust asymmetries of the pelvis caused by muscle tension. This is subtle and does not require a strenuous effort.
Kinesiotaping is used to support soft tissue and muscle, decrease swelling as well as help with healing of injured tissues via proprioception and lymphatic drainage techniques.
Low level laser therapy is the use of infra red light for promotion of healing and reducing swelling. Light energy is absorbed by chromophores within cells, such as cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria. This absorption stimulates cellular metabolism and enhances energy production (ATP synthesis).

No referral is needed, although if you have one, please bring it with you. Maine law allows for direct access to physical therapy, which means you can be seen without a referral. If your problems are out of my expertise or scope of practice, I can refer you to the appropriate healthcare provider.
No I'm an out of network provider but will provide you with a super bill to submit to your insurance for reinbursement if that is an option with your plan. You should contact your insurance company and inquire if you have out of network coverage and if they require a physician's referral.
